Quaero@H1: An Interface to High-pT HERA Event Data
Distributions from high-pT HERA event data analyzed in a general search for
new physics at H1 have been incorporated into Quaero, an algorithm designed to
automate tests of specific hypotheses with high energy collider data. The use
of Quaero@H1 to search for leptoquarks, R-parity violating supersymmetry, and
excited quarks provides examples to develop intuition for the algorithm's
performance.Comment: Submitted to Eur. Phys. J.
alphaPDE: A New Multivariate Technique for Parameter Estimation
We present alphaPDE, a new multivariate analysis technique for parameter
estimation. The method is based on a direct construction of joint probability
densities of known variables and the parameters to be estimated. We show how
posterior densities and best-value estimates are then obtained for the
parameters of interest by a straightforward manipulation of these densities.
The method is essentially non-parametric and allows for an intuitive graphical
interpretation. We illustrate the method by outlining how it can be used to
estimate the mass of the top quark, and we explain how the method is applied to
an ensemble of events containing background.Comment: 11 pages, published versio
MARMOSET: The Path from LHC Data to the New Standard Model via On-Shell Effective Theories
We describe a coherent strategy and set of tools for reconstructing the fundamental theory of the TeV scale from LHC data. We show that On-Shell Effective Theories (OSETs) effectively characterize hadron collider data in terms of masses, production cross sections, and decay modes of candidate new particles. An OSET description of the data strongly constrains the underlying new physics, and sharply motivates the construction of its Lagrangian. Simulating OSETs allows efficient analysis of new-physics signals, especially when they arise from complicated production and decay topologies. To this end, we present MARMOSET, a Monte Carlo tool for simulating the OSET version of essentially any new-physics model. MARMOSET enables rapid testing of theoretical hypotheses suggested by both data and model-building intuition, which together chart a path to the underlying theory. We illustrate this process by working through a number of data challenges, where the most important features of TeV-scale physics are reconstructed with as little as 5 inverse femtobarns of simulated LHC signals
Tropospheric Carbon Monoxide Measurements from the Scanning High-Resolution Interferometer Sounder on 7 September 2000 in Southern Africa During SAFARI 2000
[1] Retrieved tropospheric carbon monoxide (CO) column densities are presented for more than 9000 spectra obtained by the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UWis) Scanning High-Resolution Interferometer Sounder (SHIS) during a flight on the NASA ER-2 on 7 September 2000 as part of the Southern African Regional Science Initiative (SAFARI 2000) dry season field campaign. Enhancements in tropospheric column CO were detected in the vicinity of a controlled biomass burn in the Timbavati Game Reserve in northeastern South Africa and over the edge of the river of smoke in south central Mozambique. Relatively clean air was observed over the far southern coast of Mozambique. Quantitative comparisons are presented with in situ measurements from five different instruments flying on two other aircraft: the University of Washington Convair-580 (CV) and the South African Aerocommander JRB in the vicinity of the Timbavati fire. Measured tropospheric CO columns (extrapolated from 337 to 100 mb) of 2.1 × 1018 cm−2 in background air and up to 1.5 × 1019 cm−2 in the smoke plume agree well with SHIS retrieved tropospheric CO columns of (2.3 ± 0.25) × 1018 cm−2 over background air near the fire and (1.5 ± 0.35) × 1019 cm−2 over the smoke plume. Qualitative comparisons are presented with three other in situ CO profiles obtained by the South African JRA aircraft over Mozambique and northern South Africa showing the influence of the river of smoke
A Quasi-Model-Independent Search for New Physics at Large Transverse Momentum
We apply a quasi-model-independent strategy ("Sleuth") to search for new high
p_T physics in approximately 100 pb^-1 of ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV
collected by the DZero experiment during 1992-1996 at the Fermilab Tevatron.
Over thirty-two e mu X, W+jets-like, Z+jets-like, and 3(lepton/photon)X
exclusive final states are systematically analyzed for hints of physics beyond
the standard model. Simultaneous sensitivity to a variety of models predicting
new phenomena at the electroweak scale is demonstrated by testing the method on
a particular signature in each set of final states. No evidence of new high p_T
physics is observed in the course of this search, and we find that 89% of an
ensemble of hypothetical similar experimental runs would have produced a final
state with a candidate signal more interesting than the most interesting
observed in these data.Comment: 28 pages, 17 figures. Submitted to Physical Review
A measurement of the W boson mass using large rapidity electrons
We present a measurement of the W boson mass using data collected by the D0
experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron during 1994--1995. We identify W bosons by
their decays to e-nu final states where the electron is detected in a forward
calorimeter. We extract the W boson mass, Mw, by fitting the transverse mass
and transverse electron and neutrino momentum spectra from a sample of 11,089 W
-> e nu decay candidates. We use a sample of 1,687 dielectron events, mostly
due to Z -> ee decays, to constrain our model of the detector response. Using
the forward calorimeter data, we measure Mw = 80.691 +- 0.227 GeV. Combining
the forward calorimeter measurements with our previously published central
calorimeter results, we obtain Mw = 80.482 +- 0.091 GeV
Spin Correlation in tt-bar Production from pp-bar Collisions at sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV
The D0 collaboration has performed a study of spin correlation in tt-bar
production for the process tt-bar to bb-bar W^+W^-, where the W bosons decay to
e-nu or mu-nu. A sample of six events was collected during an exposure of the
D0 detector to an integrated luminosity of approximately 125 pb^-1 of
sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV pp-bar collisions. The standard model (SM) predicts that the
short lifetime of the top quark ensures the transmission of any spin
information at production to the tt-bar decay products.
The degree of spin correlation is characterized by a correlation coefficient
k. We find that k>-0.25 at the 68% confidence level, in agreement with the SM
prediction of k=0.88.Comment: Submitted to PRL, Added references, minor changes to tex
Search for Second Generation Leptoquark Pairs in pbar-p Collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV
We have searched for second generation leptoquark (LQ) pairs in the
\mu\mu+jets channel using 94+-5 pb^{-1} of pbar-p collider data collected by
the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron during 1993-1996. No evidence for a
signal is observed. These results are combined with those from the \mu\nu+jets
and \nu\nu+jets channels to obtain 95% confidence level (C.L.) upper limits on
the LQ pair production cross section as a function of mass and $beta, the
branching fraction of a LQ decay into a charged lepton and a quark. Lower
limits of 200(180) GeV/c^2 for \beta=1(1/2) are set at the 95% C.L. on the mass
of scalar LQ. Mass limits are also set on vector leptoquarks as a function of
\beta.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. Submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
Probing BFKL Dynamics in the Dijet Cross Section at Large Rapidity Intervals in ppbar Collisions at sqrt{s}=1800 and 630 GeV
Inclusive dijet production at large pseudorapidity intervals (delta_eta)
between the two jets has been suggested as a regime for observing BFKL
dynamics. We have measured the dijet cross section for large delta_eta in ppbar
collisions at sqrt{s}=1800 and 630 GeV using the DO detector. The partonic
cross section increases strongly with the size of delta_eta. The observed
growth is even stronger than expected on the basis of BFKL resummation in the
leading logarithmic approximation. The growth of the partonic cross section can
be accommodated with an effective BFKL intercept of
a_{BFKL}(20GeV)=1.65+/-0.07.Comment: Published in Physical Review Letter
Differential Production Cross Section of Z Bosons as a Function of Transverse Momentum at sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV
We present a measurement of the transverse momentum distribution of Z bosons
produced in ppbar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV using data collected by the D0
experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider during 1994--1996. We find good
agreement between our data and a current resummation calculation. We also use
our data to extract values of the non-perturbative parameters for a particular
version of the resummation formalism, obtaining significantly more precise
values than previous determinations.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Letters v2 has margin
